Howl’s moving castle: Sophie’s garden

DK weight naturally dyed single ply Portuguese wool.

100gr/ 267 or 280 m (see description)

100% bio merino or 100% Bordaleira wool (see description)

origin: Roll up the Sheep - Portugal

“Mese” is available in two versions. The colorways labeled “bio” are dyed on 100% Portuguese Merino wool sourced from certified organic farms. Each 100g skein offers 280 meters of yarn. The other colorways are dyed on 100% Portuguese Bordaleira wool, originating from the Serra da Estrela region, with each 100g skein measuring 267 meters. Despite the slight difference in fiber and yardage, both versions feel and perform the same—virtually indistinguishable when working with them.

Both yarns are light, airy, and softly felted single-ply bases, offering beautiful stitch definition. They’re especially well-suited for cables and colorwork projects.

The name “Mese” means “tale” in Hungarian, reflecting my love of storytelling. This first collection is inspired by Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones, with each colorway named after a character from the book.

The yarn base is spun by Roll Up the Sheep, a small, family-run Portuguese brand that works exclusively with locally sourced wool.

One of the characteristics of plant dyeing is that there will never be two completely identical skeins, so for larger pieces, it is recommended to alternate the skeins during knitting so that there is no noticeable contrast.

Although I do everything I can to ensure that the yarns do not lose their colour, I rinse them several times after dyeing, but I still advise that if you use several different colours in one knit, wash the skeins first to make sure that the different colours do not touch each other.
